The Urban Farm offers a variety of educational programming and hands-on training for the TMU community and members of the public throughout our growing season.

What to expect:
“Mighty Little Seeds” come in all shapes and sizes, and are a key part of our entire food system. In honour of Black History Month, we will learn about and celebrate seeds in their crucial role to ensure our food sovereignty. This workshop will explore how to save seeds, how to label and store seed packets, how to conduct seed germination tests, and so much more. Participants will be able to take home some saved seeds from the Farm’s Black Food Sovereignty Initiative to continue the journey of mighty little seeds at home!

What to expect: Do you want to start growing food in your backyard or balcony? No matter how small your space, join us to learn the basics that will set you up for success! Perfect for beginner growers, this workshop will provide you with useful tips inspired by the practice of permaculture, along with a planting demo and instructions for building a simple self-watering container.
Date and time: Wednesday April 9, 2025 1 pm - 2:30 pm

Location: ENG Rooftop Farm, 245 Church Street, 5th floor
What to expect: Come experience the changing of seasons at the Urban Farm! This field walk will give participants an introduction to phenology, a chance to practice their observation skills and plant identification, and witness the relationships, patterns and shifts in the farm ecosystem as spring awakens.
Date and time: Wednesday, May 7, 2025 4:30 pm - 6 pm
What to expect: Compost is essential to ecological growing at the Urban Farm, introducing beneficial microbes to the soil, as well as transforming crop residue and weeds to generate fertility. Attend this workshop for an introduction into the fascinating world of compost: you’ll learn about the process of hot composting, witness a vermicompost bin in action, and leave with some compost tea for your plants at home!
